Photographic record of archaeological investigations on Orkney

Colin Renfrew Orkney Photographic Archive (1972 to 1974)

The study of the history of archaeology allows us to understand how the discipline contributes to knowledge about history, cultures, civilizations and, indeed, empowers us to use archaeology more effectively in the future. A variety of tools are utilised, such as excavation reports; meeting minutes and notes; exhibition catalogues; conference proceedings and notes; articles, off-prints and cuttings from publications; photocopies; files on the McDonald grants and awards scheme; typed and manuscript notes; audio visual material such as VHS tapes, reel to reel tape and CDs; administrative documents relating to posts held by Renfrew; maps; lecture and talk notes; and files on television and radio work.

How can this collection be used in teaching, studying and research?

The bequest of the archives of both Professor Lord Colin Renfrew and Professor Anthony Sodgrass has created a unique teaching and research resource that will contribute to the development and promotion of the history of archaeology.
