Students and teachers of a raft of subjects - Literature, Linguistics, History, Science, Politics and Classics, to name just a few – will be delighted to explore this treasure trove of early printed documents, dating from 1473 to 1700.

EEBO houses over 100,000 digital versions of some of the earliest printed material in English, including play scripts, sermons, public and legal documents, religious material and some of the earliest gems of English Literature.

How can this collection be used in teaching, studying and research?

The breadth and scope of the archive offers a variety of possibilities to students and teachers of many subjects, with the opportunity to compare early versions of the classics of English Literature, examine royal statutes and study sermons by prominent religious figures of the time.

Many of the most famous figures of the15th, 16th and 17th centuries are represented in the collection, including Shakespeare, Malory, Chaucer, Dryden, Bacon, Erasmus and Galileo.

Highlights from this collection

Compare early quarto editions of Shakespeare’s plays with the famous First Folio of his works and view early commercially-printed editions of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, dating from the late 15th century.
