Slides of rare and disappearing 20th century diseases.

Image Path

Belonging to the University of Leeds and comprised of three separate archives that hold pathology slides of rare diseases from the 20th century, this collection features illnesses that were once common but are now becoming increasingly rare. The project currently holds over 5000 slides of close to 1800 cases, from archives including the Matthew Stewart collection – named after the former Chair of Pathology at Leeds, who held tenure from 1918 to 1951.

The collection holds pathology slides representing a variety of diseases, including common human cancers, gastro-intestinal and skin diseases – many of which became rare as 20th century medicine advanced or are now cured at earlier stages.

How can this collection be used in teaching, studying and research?

This collection is for those with a specialist teaching, studying or research interest in medicine generally and specifically in the areas of oncology, pathology, immunology and the history of disease.

Resources are listed by case, with detailed notes on the clinical notes, diagnosis, specimen type and slide images contained within one page.
