NewsFilm Online

3000 hours of footage from ITN & Reuters news.

NewsFilm Online

It is around 100 years since the first newsreel was played to cinema audiences and over 50 years since the first broadcast of Independent Television News (ITN). ITN, who now run news broadcasts on ITV, Channel 4 and Five, offer a selection of their archived news broadcasts and programme scripts via this digitised archive.

The site also features edited access to the archives of Reuters, Gaumont and British Paramount News, allowing access to a century of news broadcasting and programme scripts. Search and browse capabilities allow visitors to view clips by decade and subject, as well as by specific date.

How can this collection be used in teaching, studying and research?

This collection holds a wealth of visual reference material for anyone studying 20th century history, the media, arts, language, literature and any one of the thousands of news stories and historical events represented in the archive. ITN news offers an alternative view of news and opinion to that of the BBC. Of-the-moment news reports provide a contemporary view of reactions to events that have now become enshrined as moments of history.
