Witness evidence from the 2001 abuse and murder inquiry.
Victoria Climbié was eight years of age when she was murdered by her aunt and aunt’s partner, after eighteen months of abuse in their care. The inquiry subsequent to her death found failings on the part of a number of agencies whose remits included child protection. It led to the introduction of several measures, such as the Children’s Act and the Every Child Matters national framework.
Testimony from 168 witnesses, totalling approximately 2 million words of evidence, was gathered during the inquiry and has been collated in this online archive. The data can be retrieved by the job role, borough of work and evidence topics of individual witnesses.
This unique collection is of interest to those working, learning or teaching in the areas of education, law, child welfare, public administration, politics and recent history.
The collection offers a number of examples of how the materials can be used as both a learning and research resource and poses detailed questions, which those studying the case will be keen to investigate further using the materials available.
The site features a full A to Z of all witnesses, detailing their job role, background and additional notes, along with a background to the inquiry and links to relevant research literature.
